Embracing the gift of giving
Working in under privileged communities benefits the community but overall, it is the participants who need and receive the most value. It is generally accepted that community service has the capacity to reduce stress and may even contribute to feeling healthier. It is believed that moods and emotions, like optimism, joy, and control over one's fate, strengthen the immune system. Secondly, by participating in community service projects, students form friendships with each other, as well as with members of the community. These connections enhance their interpersonal skills and increase their social network. Furthermore, community service can lead to increased care for others and a desire to cooperate and get involved in positive ways, on a long term ongoing commitment.
Another major benefit of this type of service is an enhanced feeling of social connectedness and empathy that appears to be waning in our increasingly segmented society, which may lead to an increased sense of social responsibility, and a subsequent desire to "give back" to the communities from which they have come. It also offers an opportunity to discover skills and talents that are as yet untapped.
The Warriors commit to an extended community service program that will leave behind a lasting impact on a community and which will take the form of a bricks and mortar project.
